CLWA hosted a panel aimed at 1Ls to offer practical advice on things to look for in a 1L summer internship, when to start applying, and tips on the interviewing process.  The seven CLWA members who spoke at the panel worked in a variety of different areas their 1L summer, including a law firm, a large public corporation, government, the judiciary, and direct legal services.  Over 40 1Ls attended, and many asked questions about cover letters, writing samples, how to search for jobs outside New York, and how to best utilize the career services that CLS offers.  1Ls were also encouraged to contact the panelists and other CLWA members if they had any more questions or wanted further advice on their own job search.

CLWA's first reading group of the semester was a great success, with many CLWA members in attendance.  Professor Katherine Franke presented her paper entitled "Ahmadinejad Comes to Columbia: The Perils of Standing Up for the Gays".  The paper discussed the way sexual rights have been used as a foreign policy tool, often for negotiations that have nothing to do with homosexuality.  She talked about Ahmadinejad's speech at Columbia several years ago when he was quoted as saying that there are no gay people in Iran, and how this has been used by Israel as evidence of their moral superiority over Iran and the rest of the Middle East.  Students in attendance raised questions such as why gay rights instead of women's rights or any other minority groups, issues of cultural imperialism, personal reactions to Ahmadinejad's speech, conceptions of gay identity in the Middle East, and comparisons to other cultures.  The gay character on the new Israeli version of "The Office" was also discussed and how his presence is explicitly to teach a lesson about tolerance of gays in the Middle East.

Several CLWA members attended an evening workshop hosted by Shearman & Sterling entitled "Inside the Mind of a Hiring Partner.” The event, geared towards rising 2Ls, provided practical advice on topics ranging from bidding strategies, OCI interview techniques, and call-back etiquette. Hiring partners John Cannon (Executive Compensation & Employee Benefits Group) and Laura Friedrich (Global Asset Management Group) provided an insider's view of the hiring process.
